What Is Fiberglass Cleaner?

Fiberglass cleaner is a specialized cleaning product designed to effectively and safely clean fiberglass surfaces. Fiberglass is a common material used in various applications, including boats, recreational vehicles (RVs), showers, tubs, and automotive parts. Over time, fiberglass surfaces can accumulate dirt, grime, stains, and oxidation, requiring specific cleaning methods an products to restore their appearance and condition.

Fiberglass cleaners, such as FSR, are formulated to tackle the unique challenges of cleaning fiberglass. They typically have the following characteristics:

Gentle and Non-Abrasive: Fiberglass cleaners are designed to be gentle on the fiberglass surface, preventing scratches or damage that abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals may cause.

Effective Stain and Grime Removal: These cleaners are formulated to effectively remove common stains, dirt, grease, oil, mildew, and other contaminants that can mar the appearance of fiberglass.

Oxidation Removal: Fiberglass surfaces may develop a chalky or dull appearance due to oxidation. Fiberglass cleaners often contain ingredients or additives that help remove oxidation, restoring the shine and luster of the surface.

Safe for Use: Fiberglass cleaners are typically safe for use on fiberglass surfaces, including gelcoat finishes. They are formulated to be non-toxic, non-corrosive, and environmentally friendly. For example, FSR uses biodegradable oxalic acid as its active ingredient, making it ideal for use on boats.

Easy to Apply and Rinse: Most fiberglass cleaners are designed for easy application. They can be sprayed or wiped onto the surface and then rinsed off with water. Some products are specifically formulated to clean fiberglass in different contexts. Some products may require light scrubbing or agitation for stubborn stains.

When using fiberglass cleaner, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper application and safety precautions. Here are a few general steps to consider when using fiberglass cleaner:

  1. Use Scrubbis and FSR to clean your boat!
Preparing the Surface: Remove loose debris or dirt from the fiberglass surface before applying the cleaner. rinse the surface with water if necessary. A tool like Davis Instruments' Scrubbis Underwater Hull Cleaning Kit could be helpful for this step.
  2. Applying the Cleaner: Spray or apply the fiberglass cleaner onto the surface, ensuring even coverage. Allow the cleaner to sit for the recommended time, which is typically a few minutes, to allow it to penetrate and lift dirt or stains.
  3. Agitating if Necessary:  For stubborn stains or heavily soiled areas, you may need to lightly scrub or agitate the surface with a soft brush or sponge. Be gentle to avoid scratching the fiberglass.
  4. Rinsing: After the appropriate dwell time or scrubbing, rinse the fiberglass surface thoroughly with clean water. Ensure all traces of the cleaner are removed.
  5. Drying and Finishing: Dry the surface with a clean, soft cloth or towel. If desired, you can apply a protective wax or polish specifically formulated for fiberglass to enhance the shine and provide a layer of protection.
